As a first time mother, I was unsure about a lot of things. I was definitely one of those mothers who would wake up multiple times in the night just to make sure Ellis was not too hot or too cold and to check to see if he was breathing. I had countless sleepless nights filled with anxiety. Anxiety about every little thing that could happen to him while if I fell sound asleep. I was certainly a “Mombie”during those first few months.
I try my best not to let fear drive the wheel in my life, but I would be lying if I said I didn’t worry about him while he slept. at that time the Owlet Baby Monitor wasn’t on the market, otherwise, I would definitely have used it during those early months of infancy. The Owlet uses pulse oximetry, the same technology that hospitals use to monitor oxygen levels and heart rates. But instead of using a finger or toe clip, the monitor is disguised in a little sock worn by a sleeping baby.
The sock has a base station that not only charges the sock when it’s not in use, but is designed to notify you along with your phone if something may be wrong with the baby’s heart or oxygen levels. The Base Station has wireless capabilities which link to an app on your phone that displays the baby’s heart rate and oxygen level.
Luckily, we discovered the Owlet before our 10 month old son Oliver was born. It has been such a gift! I don’t get up 100 times each night to make sure he’s breathing. I don’t need to worry because Owlet tracks my baby for me while I get REAL sleep! It is truly priceless. It has been the number one most important baby gadget we have.
I found the product to have a bit of a learning curve, but once we figured it out it was a piece of cake. We have been using it consistently since the day we brought him home from the hospital. I was important when he was very tiny to put a sock over the monitor to keep his little feet warm. I was also a bit skeptical that Oliver would try to take it off, but he has never even noticed it! He would kick it off occasionally while he was sleeping, but we now have the new socks which are AMAZING!
The product requires you to download an app (that is compatible with both Iphone and Android – which has a beta app). I had no trouble syncing the app to the base station and sock. The app has an awesome troubleshooting page that helped me figure out what was wrong within a few minutes (I had to make sure that the base was plugged to an outlet before it would sync). The customer service and warranty are beyond excellent. There have been times where they have overnighted me a cord or sock or whatever was needed.
The red notification has sounded three times since Olive was born. We ran to him and woke him up. It had reported low oxygen levels but the levels were back to normal as soon as we woke up. It has been beyond helpful, and in fact, Owlet is planning to release a new app called “Connected Care” soon that will include historical data, sleep insights and more information. You can sign up here to be notified as soon as that’s available.
I function like a normal person now instead of a “mombie.” I have gotten quality sleep at night since the beginning with Oliver. And, of course we practice all safe sleep practices in addition to using the monitor.
I have loved the piece of mind it brings being able to check his vitals when we transitioned him into his own room. I’ll be saving this product for any possible babies in the future and you can most certainly put it on the list of baby rearing products I wish I had known about earlier! The price may seem a little steep at first glance, but after going through the early infancy stage without it, the piece of mind it brings alone seems worth the price.
I have purchased for or recommended this to every girlfriend I have that is expecting or has a small baby. This is what they have to say:
“I couldn’t imagine life without it when Mary was under 6 months. It gave me complete peace if mind and I was able to sleep at night knowing if Mary’s heart rate or oxygen dropped, the notification would wake me up. I loved it and will use it again if I have another baby”- Martha
“As a first time parent, everything is scary including bedtime! When Ryan was 2 months she had a cold…the owlet monitor reassured me she was doing OK and actually notified me when her oxygen level was low. When I went back to work, I could check my owlet app to see her heart rate and oxygen, and check in on her wellbeing. The owlet is a must have!”- Rainey
